EnviroSim Announces Release of BioWin 3.1 September 24, 2009
BioWin 3.1 is our newest and latest version of BioWin, featuring:

A new Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) element that simplifies both configuration and system setup, and offers comprehensive operating and performance information.

A Microscreen element for the preferential screening-out of unbiodegradable (inert) particulate VSS (XI) from the mixed liquor.

An ISS Cyclone and a dewatering DW Cyclone for the preferential removal of inorganic suspended solids (ISS).

BioWin offers the most flexible and comprehensive Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) modeling capabilities and now includes a fast approximation technique which allows engineers to estimate a solution before applying more rigorous refinements.

EnviroSim: New Team Member September 14, 2009
EnviroSim is delighted to welcome a new team member, Leiv Rieger. Leiv received his Ph.D. from EAWAG/ETH Zurich in 2004 and did postdoctoral trainings at École Polytechnique in Montreal and at Université Laval in Québec where he finally worked as a research associate. He is known for his work on monitoring, modelling and control of wastewater treatment systems and is currently chairman of the IWA Task Group on "Good Modelling Practice - Guidelines for use of Activated Sludge Models", where the focus is to make modelling more practical for industries and consultants.

Leiv recently joined the Management Committee of the IWA Specialist Group on Instrumentation, Control and Automation and is also a member of the Water Environment Federation (WEF) sub-committee MEGA (Modelling Expert Group of the Americas), the WEF Automation and Information Technology committee (AIT) and the chair of the scientific committee of the 1st and 2nd IWA/WEF Wastewater Treatment Modelling Seminar (WWTmod).

Leiv is associated editor of Water Science and Technology and a reviewer for several journals in the field of water research.

Leiv will focus on developing tools to facilitate standard modelling tasks including data quality aspects. Welcome Leiv.

EnviroSim Announces Enhancements to BioWin 3 November 26, 2007
BioWin 3.0.1
The following additions have been made to BioWin, now BioWin 3.0.1:
    1. Changes to three default kinetic parameters
            a. Substrate (NO2) half sat.
            b. Anoxic NO2 half sat.
            c. NH3 nutrient half sat.
    2. Local biofilm parameters :
             media bioreactors can now specify individual biofilm parameters.
    3. Activity coefficients are reported in element summaries.
    4. Superior Windows VistaTM support.

EnviroSim: Welcome Home Chris Bye November 02, 2007
EnviroSim is delighted to announce the return of Dr Chris Bye from a one year sabbatical (Oct 2006 – Sept 2007) in Australia. Based at a large multi-disciplinary consulting firm, Chris rounded out his specialist modeling experience through involvement in several projects including a key role in the Engineering Design of the Alkimos WWTP, which will be the fourth major plant serving the Perth, Western Australia metropolitan region. Another focus area was the evaluation of decentralized wastewater treatment and recycling technology, culminating in Dr. Bye serving as a technical advisor for the Department of the Premier and Cabinet’s state water recycling strategy. Welcome home Chris.

EnviroSim: New Team Member August 1, 2007
EnviroSim is delighted to add a new team member, Dwight Houweling. Dwight, who received his Ph.D. from Ecole Polytechnic of Montreal 2006, joins us as an NSERC/IRDF Post Doctoral Fellow. Dwight’s Ph.D. studies centered on modeling aerated facultative lagoon systems. During his fellowship Dwight’s investigations will focus on developing a complete metabolic model for PAOs and GAOs in activated sludge systems. Welcome Dwight.

EnviroSim Announces Release of BioWin 2.1 July 19, 2004
Existing BioWin users who are leasing the software can now upgrade to the new BioWin 2.1. EnviroSim’s policy is that upgrades are included in the annual lease, and these usually are distributed electronically. With this upgrade to BioWin 2.1 our aim is that all users should receive a replacement CD because the upgrade requires a complete installation. The cost for CD preparation, courier shipping and handling will be US$100.

Calibration Course in Paris by Envirosim a Success May 26/27, 2003
The second EnviroSim Calibration Seminar was held in Paris in May 2003. Influent fractionation, nitrification rate measurement methods, and various calibration techniques based on the latest literature as well as recent work by EnviroSim and other researchers, were presented and discussed with the participants. Responding to the success of the seminar and interest of the wastewater engineering community, EnviroSim will offer the course in the future in Europe and other locations around the world.

IWA ASM 1, 2d, and 3 Now Available August 14, 2002
The IWA ASM models are now available in BioWin. Download the model library and accompanying help, and you can start using the models in any plant layout configuration. Compare BioWin and IWA model predictions or simply run published IWA model configurations for reference. In the future EnviroSim will make other international models available in BioWin - check back for updates.

BioWin Anaerobic Digester Update March 8, 2001
The latest version of BioWin (v 1.2.1) has entered the final beta testing stage. We expect the official release will take place very soon. This represents a major upgrade to BioWin, incorporating a number of new features. A brief summary of these includes:

  • Automatic report generation (printout or Microsoft Word™);
  • Anaerobic digester element;
  • Grey box element with built in equation editor to allow users to set up their own models;
  • Activated primary settling tank element (i.e. PST with biological reaction);
  • BOD influent element (allows input of influent wastewater data in terms of BOD, TSS, VSS, etc.);
  • New model processes and state variables (including 4 user-defined state variables);
  • Expanded documentation of model kinetics and stoichiometry, and influent nutrient (i.e. nitrogen and phosphorus) fractionation;
  • New types of tables and series gives even more flexibility in data presentation.

BioWin Update Released July 7, 2000
We have begun the process of upgrading our users to the latest version (1.1.2) of BioWin. A number of enhancements and fixes have been incorporated in this release. Detailed explanation of the changes may be found in the following technical note.

Web Site Structure Changes April 26, 2000
In order to give EnviroSim customers easier access to information, we have recently made some changes to the structure and content of our web site:

  • We have expanded and added to the Downloads section. Users of our products are able to download sample configurations for free!! In the future, this section will continue to expand and have more configurations added.
  • To give users of our products another means of communicating with us (and each other) we have added a Discussion Forum to our web site. Users (or potential users) of our software products can post messages and get feedback from both EnviroSim staff and other users.
  • To help users of our web site find the information they want quickly, we have added search functionality to our web site. From the Search page, users can perform both simple and advanced queries of all the material contained on our web site.
  • The Publications and References section has been reorganized and expanded to include more papers. It also has been moved up within the web site's navigational structure so that it is easier to find.
  • The BioWin Technical Notes section has had three additional documents added to it.

Sequencing Batch Reactor Update November 24, 1999
The development of BioWin's Sequencing Batch Reactor module is finished. The next release of BioWin incorporating the SBR module is available now. This BioWin release includes five new SBR modules:

  • A single-tank SBR;
  • An SBR with an always-mixed hydraulically linked pre-treatment zone;
  • An SBR with two always-mixed hydraulically linked pre-treatment zones;
  • An SBR with a mix/settle hydraulically linked pre-treatment zone;
  • An SBR with two mix/settle hydraulically linked pre-treatment zones.

Users will be able to set up complex operating patterns easily using BioWin's elegant interface. Vary airflow rates or dissolved oxygen setpoints during the SBR mixing phase using BioWin's scheduling utilities.
