When running the BioWin installation program (or the hardlock installation program hldrv32.exe) I am getting the error: "Failed to start a service in the Service Control Manager Database".

It is possible that the device drivers installed on your machine are out of date. Download the latest drivers here : http://www.envirosim.com/BWUN/ver/2_1_sa/hl/hl_devdr.exe

Save the file hl_devdr.exe to a location of your choice.

Double click on hl_devdr.exe and follow the wizard that will guide you through the whole process.

Do I require any extra software or hardware to run BioWin?

No. All that is required is Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT / 2000.

What models are used in BioWin?

BioWin uses models based on the latest research in the wastewater process modeling field. For more detailed information, please see the Technical Information section.

The installation of BioWin on my Windows NT-based PC went smoothly, but when I try and run it, I am getting error messages.

These problems are related to specific Windows NT installation issues. To address these, please refer to the technical note entitled Windows NT Issues.

One of the toolbars at the top of the main BioWin window is missing.

This is due to the fact that you do not have a recent version of a Windows common control file. If you contact us we can email you a Microsoft update file, or you can visit the Microsoft web site and investigate the Windows Update sections.

I cannot print the contents of a single-pane album page.

Currently you cannot print the contents of a single-pane album page using the Album|Print page menu command after the file you are working on has been saved. To print your album page, right-click on the chart or table and select Print from the popup menu (for charts the Print command is in the Display sub-menu).

This issue has been resolved in BioWin v 1.1.0.

When I try to print an Element Information Display from the album, only the top left section gets printed.

We currently are working on addressing this problem. For now, we suggest one of the following two workarounds:

  1. Right-click on the Element Information Display and select Copy from the resulting popup menu. Switch to your word processing application and paste it in so that you can print it out.

  2. Right-click on the Element Information Display and select Add to notes from the resulting popup menu. Now open BioWin's Notes editor and print out the information.

This issue has been resolved in BioWin v 1.1.0.

When I start a dynamic or steady state solution, the dialog box that allows me to Start/Pause/Stop the simulation is missing the control buttons used to perform these actions.

This problem occurs if you change certain Windows System settings such as your screen display resolution or the default system printer while BioWin is running in the background. To avoid this problem we suggest that you exit BioWin before making these types of system changes.

This issue has been resolved in BioWin v 1.1.0.

After one SRT inversion, the SRT calculator will not progress any further.

This problem is known to occur on slower machines (e.g. <150 MHz) running Windows 95. You may have difficulty exiting BioWin. This has been fixed in the later versions of BioWin. Please contact us if you experience this problem.

After I have installed the Hardlock Server program on Windows Server 2003, the clients are still not able to access the hardlock.

Windows Server 2003 requires an updated version of the Hardlock Server software. Click here to download. Other indications of this problem include one of the following messages :

The hl-server service will not start. Error 1053 is reported: “The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion”

or

Installing the Device drivers failed. The error message is : Failed to start the Aladdin Device Driver. Failed to start a service in the Service Control Manager Database.

How can I access a network hardlock if WinXP firewall is active?

Beginning with Service Pack 2 (SP2) Windows XP comes with an integrated firewall. Operation of (network) hardlocks requires opening of the relevant communication ports in the firewall. Ports must be opened on server side (where the network hardlock is attached) as well as on client side (searching for the hardlock):

      1. Click Start - Control Panel
      2. Open the Security Center
      3. Select Windows Firewall
      4. Go to tab Exceptions. Open ports TCP and UDP 3047:
            - Click Add Port
            - Enter port number 3047
            - Enter port number 3047 also for the UDP protocol

Now communication should also work with activated firewall.

In the SBR operation dialog box, the Decant Rate always shows units of ML/d, regardless of the unit system I choose.

We are addressing this problem which has been reported by users. Note that this only is a display problem - the correct units and numbers are being used in all calculations. To verify that this is a display problem, try using the Project|Options command to change the unit system being used and see how the decant rate figure changes according to the different unit system choices.

This issue has been resolved in BioWin v 1.1.2.

I exported a chart in *.TEE format, and then imported it into another BioWin project. After I import it, the chart is still active, rather than an inactive picture.

We are addressing this problem. This may not occur for all charts that are exported / imported in this format. As an interim workaround, export / import charts in one of the other graphics formats. If you would like to plot additional data on an imported chart, use the Album|Save pages command to save your charts, and then use the Album|Open pages command to bring them into another project.

This issue has been resolved in BioWin v 1.1.2.
